Generation VI has introduced a lot of features that drastically changed the perspective of Pokemon, and one of them are the Mega Evolutions; a powerful ability that helps Pokemon to get the boosts they need to match the opposition.
In game, this feature allows Trainers to strengthen their Pokemon into a whole new level; gaining monstrous boosts on certain key stats, granting them new Abilities, and changing their play styles significantly. In addition, there are certain Pokemon that became viable in the current meta due to their Mega Evolutions; cranking up the competition to a higher degree. While there are some Megas that are insanely strong, some are just... meh.
So without further delay, I will now announce my Top 10 favorite Pokemon Mega Evolutions!
TOP 10: Mega Absol
Those angelic-like wings are a very nice touch.
The majesty of its design is more than reason enough to put it in my Top 10 list. In addition, the boost in Speed and Attack makes it an undeniable sweeper in its own right after a Swords Dance boost. Plus, it has gained access to Magic Bounce; a useful Ability to consider against the current meta filled with entry hazards and status ailments. However, its defenses are still terrible even when Mega Evolving so don't expect for this Pokemon to survive that much. But with an access to a boosted Sucker Punch, who cares about its terrible defenses? Just go for broke and be done with it! All in all, the Disaster Pokemon can really bring forth disaster with proper timing and prediction.
TOP 9: Mega Banette
Those zippers adds a sinister feel to this particular Mega Evolution and it's why I like it so much.
Ghost-Types are very rare and considered to be one of the nastiest threats in competitive play in the likes of Sableye and Mega Gengar. However, Banette also deserves some Pokemon love; which what Nintendo did due to its Mega Evolution. So what's to like about Mega Banette? Well, other than the massive boost on its Attack, it gains access to Prankster; an already annoying Ability on an already annoying Pokemon. Prankster rewards users with an additional priority to status moves such as Will-O-Wisp and Thunder Wave; both of which Banette can learn through Technical Machines. Just be careful as you Mega Evolve as Prankster will not activate immediately about the time you Mega Evolve that turn. Despite Prankster, however, it is still outclassed by other Ghost Pokemon that can rely on status ailments while being bulky at the same time. Nevertheless, it has promise.
TOP 8: Mega Aerodactyl
Those craggy shards scream sheer power. No wonder it has Tough Claws!
Aerodactyl is a particular underdog that gets little love in competitive play. However, in the advent of Generation VI, the Prehistoric Pokemon was lucky enough to get a powerful Mega Evolution on its own... and it remains the same. The only different thing about this creature is that it has a special niche that can make it a pseudo-Mega Charizard X with Tough Claws; an awesome Ability that raises the power of contact moves by 33% which is basically a Life Orb for contact moves and without the nasty recoil. Now if only Mega Aerodactyl can learn Head Smash...
TOP 7: Mega Blastoise
Those arm cannons do help give Mega Blastoise the firepower it needs to stomp the competition.
Talk about a shell-shocking good time! Mega Blastoise blasts its way in the competitive field, thanks to its Ability Mega Launcher; increasing the power of certain "Aura" and "Pulse" moves such as Aura Sphere and Water Pulse. Fortunately, the moves it needs can be learned via breeding which brings the monstrous turtle into the field of competitive gaming. It is really cool to know that certain Pokemon from previous Generations can be surprisingly powerful to even go head-to-head with the many popular Pokemons out there like Greninja and Swampert; proving the statement "being old isn't always bad". :)
TOP 6: Mega Manectric
For once, I thought that the lightning mane is quite ridiculous, but after getting whopped by one of them... Hmmm.... *sniff* I crave to want one... O.O
Oh please! The design of this thing is horrendous and so bad that its not worth mentioning in this Top 10 list... is what I have in mind. In reality, however, Mega Manectric has this particular potential that is being overlooked by most players which makes me like it. Sure that it has no changes in typing whatsoever and it's still weak to Ground attacks, but it gets Intimidate; allowing it to have a fighting chance against foes with high Attacks and unleashes its own STAB attacks to eliminate them in the process. The Speed boost may be a little insignificant against certain threats like Garchomp and Greninja which can still outpace it even after Mega Evolving and it can be very frustrating. Nevertheless, its Special Attack boost can allow it to go par with other Special Attackers out there.
TOP 5: Mega Charizard Y
This silly dragon is still vulnerable to Stealth Rock, and its not as amusing as you think it is...
There are two distinct Mega Charizard variants that appeared in Generation VI. X & Y. What?! What's that supposed to mean? Well obviously, these version are exclusive from one game to the other and Charizardite Y is the one I originally received during my original playthrough of X & Y. I received a Charizardite X as a bonus. Nevertheless, it's strength lies in powering up Sun teams and weakening Water-types with Drought. In addition, Mega Charizard Y synergizes well with Pokemons that uses Solar Beam and Chlorophyll; making it an indispensable addition to any teams requiring those mentioned perks.
TOP 4: Mega Heracross
The design of this particular Mega Evolution kinda reminds me a lot of the Alteisen. Ever played Super Robot Taisen before? Well, its kinda like that without the shoulder cannons.
This herculean monstrosity of a Pokemon has this potential to become a powerful sweeper throughout the game. One of its main reasons is Skill Link, a powerful ability that makes multi-hit moves hit foes equal to the maximum amount of times a move supposed to hit. Also, Heracross knows a variety of multi-hit moves like Pin Missile, Rock Blast, Bullet Seed, and Arm Thrust; all of which can benefit from Skill Link and Heracross' already high Attack stat. Heracross' typing, however, is still terrible, having a 4x weakness against Flying types. Talonflame is a sure-fire way to destroy Heracross with Gale Wings and the ever-annoying Brave Bird, but other than that, the Single Horn Pokemon can break the spine of many foes ahead with its 5-hit attacks.
TOP 3: Mega Charizard X
Blue flames and that Shiny-like color palette is one of the few reasons to choose this baby over its Y counterpart... and I hate that line of thinking! Regardless, its a tough customer to deal with.
The powerhouse of Mega Evolutions... or so I assume. I remember the first time I heard about this Pokemon that excites almost everyone except me because back then I was like "another Dragon type? Pffft!" but then I realize that its infamous Dragon Dance (can be learned by breeding) combo can hurt A LOT, and it became a mainstay in my Fire team (and probably everyone else's mainstay in any team) which can win battles... A LOT! The only thing I hate about this Pokemon is that, unlike Mega Charizard Y, it loses its Flying immunity in exchange for its Dragon typing. But who cares about it if you already have an awesome Fire Dragon in your hands? No one! Overall, Mega Charizard X delivers a powerful blow with its Tough Claws boosts in exchange of some notable perks to make it balanced.
TOP 2: Mega Venusaur
The design is not that special. Venusaur's Mega Evolution simply enlarges the flower on its back as well as some additional markings on its skin, so I see no reason to put that image right here in my blog. Besides, the file is too big. XD
Venusaur is getting a lot of attention in Generation V onward because of one useful Ability; Chlorophyll. This pretty useful Ability befits this monstrous flower because the user gains additional Speed under the sun; meaning Drought Ninetales and Mega Charizard Y are recommended for Venusaur as battle partners. Furthermore, it gives the Seed Pokemon the potential to sweep against opponents with a barrage of Sleep Powders and Giga Drains. Generation VI, on the other hand, ramps up its usefulness to a whole new level by giving a Mega Evolution on its own; turning the monster-like flower into a monster, literally! But what makes it so popular? With the prevalence of Ice and Fire attacks in the metagame, Venusaur's use has given some thought by many experienced players because of Thick Fat, the Ability it receives during Mega Evolution which allows Venusaur to reduce the damage of all Fire and Ice dealt to Venusaur by half; which is basically a free Filter or Solid Rock against these two popular types. In conclusion, Mega Venusaur is a beast that has a lot of potential only to be under-appreciated by the rest of the Mega Evolution roster.
TOP 1: Mega Blaziken
Such a tall order to call it an "overpowered" Pokemon? I don't think so! It IS an overpowered Pokemon and it's not even chickening around to prove it.
Dun-dun-duuuuuuun! The one thing that you've all been waiting for! The most powerful Mega Evolution to ever exist in a Pokemon game; Mega Blaziken! As I have mentioned in my Top 10 favorite Fire-Types, Blaziken was given a lot of love in Generation V due to its Hidden Ability, Speed Boost, which can cause even the fastest of Choice Scarfers to quake in fear. In addition, its already high Attack stat made the Blaze Pokemon an even more catastrophic threat than any other Pokemon in the current meta that even its base form was restricted in tournaments. Nevertheless, Brave Bird Talonflame and Unburden Acrobatics Hawlucha can still annihilate the burning chicken (provided that it doesn't run Focus Sash). Also, when Mega Evolving, Blaziken's Attack and Speed skyrockets that even Garchomp cannot escape from its fiery powers. However, like most popular Pokemon in the metagame, Blaziken suffers greatly from having four move slots which can determine great Blaziken users from the terrible ones. Regardless of the skills you have in handling Blaziken, its Mega form can crush the opposition with little to no effort, thanks to Speed Boost.
